Pinot Gris

This wine is our New World version of the Russian Czar’s favorite wine. The project began in 1987 after we tasted a 100 year old bottle of this wine in the cellars of Massandra in the former Soviet Union and learned that Gorgachev was destroying all the vineyards in the area, threatening this wine with extinction. The local vineyard and winery owners were most helpful, telling us about the winemaking traditions, the ageability of the wine, and the importance of the fortifying spirit. We listened, experimented on our own, and released the first American Pinot Gris Dessert Wine, with its classic copper color, in 1996 to rave reviews. Since that time, the wine has improved with age, as we expected it would.

Beginning in 2001, we stopped vintage dating our Pinot Gris and now produce small lots of a solera style, multi-vintage bottling. The barrels of Pinot Gris in our cellars that are used to make this blend date back to the mid-1990s.
